FREE LECTURE – International Master Program in Psychoanalytic Studies Università degli Studi Roma Tre

What happens when psychoanalysis takes seriously the social world its patients live in?
In this two-part lecture, Lynne Layton (Harvard Medical School) offers an overview of her work, drawing on clinical material to show how racism, sexism and neoliberalism shapes inner life, suffering, and the consulting room itself.
Part One: (about 60 minutes): theoretical lecture on unconscious normative processes with clinical illustrations of how power structures and inequalities pressures show up in the therapeutic encounter. A Q&A follows.
Part two: (about 20 minutes): A turn toward psychoanalytic institutions themselves, and the ways they defend against reckoning with the harm they cause by refusing to acknowledge systemic social forces and inequalities.
Further discussion follows.
The structure leaves room for questions after each part, so there’s time to think together rather than just listen.
Open to clinicians, students, and anyone interested in the intersection of psychoanalysis, politics, and social justice .
