About This Event

This workshop will examine the subjective and sociopolitical effects of internalized oppression and identification with the aggressor, focusing on how these dynamics manifest both within and beyond the consulting room. Drawing on Sándor Ferenczi’s work on trauma and dissociation, we will explore how survivors of abuse internalize conflicting realities, often resorting to psychic fragmentation and identification with the aggressor as a survival strategy.

We will discuss clinical tools to work with shame, splitting, and psychic fragmentation as a mechanism to cope with different forms of oppression.

In dialogue with Ferenczi, we will explore the works of Frantz Fanon, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Aníbal Quijano, whose analyses of coloniality, borderland identities, and racialized oppression enrich our understanding of these phenomena at the collective level.

• Integrate psychoanalytic and sociopolitical frameworks to articulate how individual psychic processes intersect with collective histories of trauma and oppression.
• Analyse Sándor Ferenczi’s contributions on trauma, dissociation, and psychic fragmentation, and connect them to survival strategies in the aftermath of abuse.
• Evaluate Gloria Anzaldúa’s insights on borderland identities and cultural fragmentation as a lens for understanding collective forms of internalized oppression.
