What is a simple solution to this? Have discussions regarding racial issues. Inquire about a client's racial identification during the first session. In the middle of all the usual getting-to-know-you questions that are generally asked in the first session, let your client know that you like asking all of your clients about their reference groups because you understand the significance of social group identities. Let them know that it's okay if they'd prefer not to respond, but at least you've left the door open and they know it will be welcomed if it becomes necessary at any time throughout therapy.
