Black Psychotherapy, working in partnership and with sponsorship from the University of East London School of Childhood and Social Care, invites submissions for our upcoming conference on Justice in Therapy: Decolonising the Curriculum.
This conference builds on the findings from previous participatory conferences exploring justice in therapy, continuing the urgent conversation about transforming counselling and psychotherapy education in the movement towards anti-oppressive and justice-informed practice. As the profession reckons with its colonial inheritance, Eurocentric canon, and the implications of structural violence, we ask:
What must be dismantled and what must be built to decolonise counselling and psychotherapy training?
We are seeking presentations that move beyond symbolic or performative diversity and inclusion strategies and towards structural change. Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Re-designing counselling and psychotherapy curricula through decolonial frameworks
- Anti-oppressive pedagogy in therapeutic training
- Challenging whiteness, Eurocentrism and colonial epistemologies in theory and practice
- Embedding Black, Indigenous, and Global Majority psychologies into core teaching
- Student-led movements and resistance within institutions
- Curriculum audit case studies
- Strategies for decolonising practice-based teaching (including assessments, research methods, and placement preparation)
- Creative, embodied, relational and community-based pedagogies
- Institutional accountability and structural change
We particularly welcome submissions from Black and racially minoritised educators, practitioners, researchers, trainees and community leaders.
