Description: All are welcome to a public conversation with renowned psychoanalyst and writer, Patricia Gherovici, in person, who will speak about her groundbreaking work in Philadelphia’s barrios, on what she terms “transgender psychoanalysis” and on psychoanalytic training. In her work, she explores the intersections of psychoanalysis, gender, sexuality, trauma, and social justice with a particular focus on Latin American contexts. She is known for her application of Lacanian psychoanalysis to address the psychological effects of social and political opporession, and for her contributions to queer theory and transgender studies within the psychoanalytic field. CPD available. Attendance: In person (limited and early booking advised) at the FLi rooms 18 Fitzwilliam St., Basement Floor, and by distance for those who wish to attend by distance.
Bio: Patricia Gherovici PhD is an Argentinian-America psychoanalyst, theorist, and an award winning author. Her single-authored books includeThe Puerto Rican Syndrome (Other Press: 2003) winner of the Gradiva Award and the Boyer Prize,Please Select Your Gender: From the Invention of Hysteria to the Democratizing of Transgenderism (Routledge: 2010) and Transgender Psychoanalysis: A Lacanian Perspective on Sexual Difference(Routledge: 2017). Her edited volumes are Psychoanalysis in the Barrios: Race, Class, and the Unconscious(Winner of the Gradiva Award for best edited collection 2019, and the American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis Book Prize 2019; Psychoanalysis, Gender, and Sexualities: From Feminism to Trans (2023) (winner of the Gradiva Award Best Edited Collection 2023), and forthcoming The Routledge International Handbook of Psychoanalysis and Gender (2026).
