Alaa should have been released from prison in Egypt 240 day sago, but Britain hasn’t lifted a finger to secure his release.  His mother, Dr Laila Soueif, has been on hunger strike here in Britain for over 240 days to demand her son’s release. Her hunger strike has now reached a critical and life-threatening stage. She has already lost over 40% of her body weight and been hospitalised. Britain has made false promises to Alaa’s family time and time again. In the midst of Israel’s genocide on Gaza, it is clear that David Lammy has let Britain’s ally, Egypt, off the hook for Egypt’s compliant role in the genocide and starvation of Gaza. Lammy’s shameful refusal to push Egypt only further highlights British complicity in genocide.Taking inspiration from the Palestinian prisoners struggle, Laila has vowed to continue on hunger strike until her son is released or her collapse. We – friends, comrades, and members of the public here in Britain – must not let this happen. Following the speakers from Alaa’s family, BLMUK & activists from the Palestine movement, we will move into break-out groups and discuss together how we can take urgent action to demand Alaa’s freedom now. Snacks will be provided in a separate kitchen space. The venue has a ramp & working elevator.
